Dr. Shiyang Pan

CHIEF SCIENTIST

Professor Shiyang Pan, chief physician, researcher and doctoral supervisor, is the director of the Department of Laboratory Medicine in Nanjing Medical University (NJMU) and the First Affiliated Hospital of NJMU. He also serves as the director of the National Key Specialty of Clinical Laboratory and the Branch Center of the National Clinical Research Center for Clinical Laboratory, and the person in charge of the Doctoral programs in first-level discipline of Medical Technology. He is concurrently holding the positions of vice president of Chinese Society of Laboratory Medicine (CSLM), Honorary Chairman of Laboratory Medicine Branch of Jiangsu Medical Association, Expert of Center for Medical Device Evaluation of National Medical Products Administration (NMPA), President of Committee on Molecular Diagnostic in Oncology(C-MDO), Molecular Diagnosis Committee of International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC), Deputy-Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Journal of Laboratory Medicine, Associate Editor of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (CCLM). Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Journal of Clinical Laboratory Science.

Dr. Pan co-chaired the development of expert consensus and clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of disease with clinical experts. Among them, the "In-Hospital Process for Viral Hepatitis C Screening and Management in China" and "Expert Consensus on Viral Hepatitis Health Management" were published in Chinese Journal of Hepatology and Chinese Journal of Health Management in May and August 2021, respectively. They highlighted the function and value of clinical laboratory medicine in clinical diagnosis and treatment, and expanded the clinical service connotation of laboratory medicine. Besides, he participated in the project planning of in vitro diagnostic reagents in the “14th Five-Year Key Research and Development Plan" of National Ministry of Science and Technology. As a distinguished expert of the Medical Device Technology Review Center of NMPA, he also participated in the technology review of medical devices and the establishment of related regulations and development planning.

Dr. Pan is mainly engaged in the discovery and translational research of molecular biomarkers of clinical major diseases. Taking advantages of self-established monoclonal antibody library, clinical specimen library and rapid screening technology platform, monoclonal antibody NJ001 specific antigen (a novel tumor biomarker) named Tumor Specific Protein 70 (TSP70 or SP70) was discovered after more than 30 years research and was first reported in PLOS ONE (2012). Highly expressed SP70 promotes most common cancer cell proliferation and invasion. It is not only a tumor biomarker for cancer diagnosis, but also plays an important role of therapeutic target with good expectation on cancer precision medicine.  Additionally, patented technology for the quantification of cell-free DNA with internal standards. This is the first innovative liquid biopsy technique for clinical precise assessment of tissue and organ damage caused by cell death to realize the real world analysis of diseases severity.

Dr. Pan has presided over more than 10 national and provincial research projects, and as the Editor-in-Chief, compiled an English monograph "Clinical Molecular Diagnostics" of more than a million words. It was internationally published by Springer Publishing Group and People’s Medical Publishing House(PMPH) distributing Chinese new medical technology to the world. He has obtained a total of 15 invention patents from United States, Australia and China, and published more than 80 high quality research papers indexed in SCI. He was selected into the "High-level Entrepreneurial Talents Introduction Program" by Nanjing City Government in 2016. He was awarded the title of "Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions" by Jiangsu Provincial Government in 2020. And he received the title of National Famous Doctor (Outstanding Achievements) of China in 2023.
